VRBS Community Tree and Fruit Nursery
Tl;dr: We are looking for 0.66 ETH to establish a 5000 indigenous tree and fruit nursery to aid in reforestation and food security in Laikipia, Kenya
What..?
Laikipia county is home to some of the most biodiverse ecosystems in Kenya.Home to some of the largest forests in the country, the area has suffered a great deal of loss as deforestation takes root with the demand for charcoal and timber skyrocketing. The result is lots of wildlife has lost its habitat which in result has accelerated the human wildlife conflict in the area. We are looking to establish a 5 thousand tree capacity for all types of trees, to aid in reestablishing forest cover along with fruit trees to boost food security in the area
Why…?
Laikipia county has seen a very significant drop in forest cover. The trees that have stood for thousands of years are dwindling and falling to the ever merciless hand of our invasive species. In return the area has experienced a bout of the effects of climate change with weather patterns growing more unpredictable. Dry seasons are becoming longer and more devastating year by year. Our role is to do the dirty work of growing tree seedlings in order to motivate the local community to play their part in the fight against climate change. This is important because: Majority of the local community in Laikipia is comprised of subsistence farmers. A significant shift in weather patterns would render them cropless which would in turn lead to a food crisis. By planting trees, they will have played a part in protecting the water catchments and conserving the biosphere, along with ensuring their food security. Planting fruit trees is a great way to increase tree cover, boost food production and income, all at once. By giving the farmers avocado trees, mango trees and other fruit trees, the local community will have achieved a great deal with somewhat little effort. By achieving the said goals, we will have played a significant part in improving the quality of life in the area, with helping the local community achieve food security, playing a part in combating climate change and unpredictable weather patterns and increasing the food output and income of the local community.
Vrbs can help bring this project to fruition by funding a project that will leverage web3 in the following ways.
-Make use of web3 socialFi to track and register the follow ups and progress of the project.
• Teaching the local community about the world of decentralization and decentralized systems of governance.

How...?
We are looking to build a sustainable shaded tree nursery to serve as the tree nursery. The nursery will be a 200 square metre 70% shaded net structure housing beds to propagate the tree and fruit seeds in. The nursery will be equipped with a reliable and efficient watering system, a climate controlling system, UV resistant shade nets and a storage room for tools and equipment. The nursery will also give local community the education on proper maintanance and tending practice for the trees and fruits. For our first operation, we will give away tree seedlings for free, followed by fruit seedlings shortly after, then afterwards, we will sell the seedlings at a very cheap price to keep the operation sustainable.
Budgetary allocation and breakdown
Land,Site and beds preparation- Clearing, bed making, soil collection and sampling - $700
Shaded net nursery structure- Building materials(posts, UV shade nets, irrigation apparatus, working tools and equipment- $600
Water supply system- Water tank, rain collection gutter system, water pump - $500
Bulk tree and fruit seeds, fertilizer and biodegradable planting papers- $400
Transport and logistics -$100
fencing,footbath,sanitiser-$100

Goodluck!
We have been discussing this for a while now, and they have answered all my questions about the project's continuation after the funding. I hope to see this grow beyond what we expect!
